A brief history 1954 - 2003

The SLPS was formed in 1954 from a section of the Wavertree Community Association which met at Cadby Hall. SLPS then moved to a local Baptist Hall. Finances were meagre at the start but the society soon attracted a growing membership. The standard of work produced by 'The South' meant that it became a very prestigious club in competitions both in the North-West and nationally. Individual members have received distinctions from The Royal Photographic Society and The Photographic Alliance of Great Britain.
Since 1972, our annual exhibition has been held at a range of venues including The University of Liverpool Senate House, Cavern Walks, Mercury House and currently The Royal Liver Building. For many years now, we have been privileged to have our exhibition opened by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool.
In 1991, we incorporated The Liverpool Amateur Photographic Society (LAPA) which was founded in 1853 and is part of photographic history. We have had numerous venues and are now located at CADWA Hall, having recently moved from an Edwardian clubhouse in Childwall.
Among the initiatives undertaken by the club over the years were a highly successful public lecture at The Philharmonic Hall by Lord Lichfield and a joint exhibition in 2000 at St. George's Hall by SLPS and photographers from Shanghai, Liverpool's twin city. The photographs from this exhibition were also shown in Shanghai. The establishment of a very popular Digital Imaging group has attracted members from all over Merseyside.
We are constantly seeking to raise the profile of the club and photography in general and are currently planning an exhibition to celebrate our Golden Jubilee in 2004.
